How to Claim

Mileage expenses can be claimed from your employer or against your end of year tax return. You can claim the following mileage rates:

  • Car and van drivers can claim 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles;
  • Car and van drivers can claim 25ppm after the 10, 000 mile threshold;
  • Motorcyclists can claim 24 ppm regardless of the distance covered;
  • Cyclists can claim 20 ppm regardless of the distance covered.

To claim at the above mileage rates, you must keep a mileage log recording all your business mileage expenses. This can be done using a mileage log book, a mileage log spreadsheet, or online: sign up to the Tripcatcher mileage log, the no-fuss way to log your business mileage, using the "Sign Up" link at the top of the screen.

To find out more, check out the government approved mileage rate, or look at the information for Contractors, Self-Employed, Employees, Volunteer Drivers and Agency Workers.
